John D. Green
Neo Soul, Jazz..Singer, Song Writer & Musician
John Shares...

My love of music started as a child. My mom had a piano that she would play gospel music on with her twin sister. She was pretty bad ass on the piano! As children, we weren't allowed to touch the piano, but every time she left the house I would bang on the keys and that is how I learned to play. One day I was clowning on the piano when my mom was out, at least I thought she was out, I turned around and there she was! I was expecting a beat down, but she sat down and jammed with me instead. I have been playing ever since. Most of my music is written from my experiences, my feelings, or my observations. I write from my heart. 1 man, 1 piano, 1 unique sound! I like pure music and I write for you, my fans, in the hopes that I can inspire or create a feeling.

Lady Flava's Side Note:

John D. Green came into my cyberspace world on facebook through an amazing and accomplished jazz artist, Brian O'Neal.  As a short amount of time passed and I began to learn of this man's talents, his drive and passion for his art...I was no question in my mind that he and his talents would have a special place in my heart.  John put his heart on the line and share stories of frustrations with me.  I appreciate that fact that he is just real and felt safe to share.  In time Brian O'neal talked with him and encouraged and mentored him on how he needed to approach his art and passion for music.  From there you could see a change and growth in the gifted soul.  Just recently, John joined me on an online artist's round table discussion with other artist from around the globe...this was the first time I ever spoke to him and grew to have a different, yet strong feel, understanding and respect for him.

John is an amazing man.  He is a husband, a father and an artist that writes, composes music and sings from his heart and soul.  I look forward to being a witness to his journey as he finds his way and shares his flava.

Anthony Armstrong
Painter

www.armstrongnart.net

Anthony Armstrong is the sole creator of each acrylic and metallic oil painting you see on display. He paints primarily on Canvas and Paper The technique in the paintings involves layering transparent and opaque glazes, building them slowly over time to produce depth, mystery and subtle variations of texture. he creates to inspire. It is important in his work that he paint intuitively, with no models or photographs to influence the spontaneity of my inner perceptions as they emerge. His approach the canvas as an abstract painter, working with divisions of space, shapes and lines, Anthony enjoys the added challenge of using the human figure. He also is concerned with the painted surface and take great pains with the brushwork and palette knife to make it look effortless. Anthony ties to make each painting better than the last. Sometimes he feels he succeeds. He is often asked which is his favorite and he reply, "the next one." Anthony consciously works with technique and composition, but as he reviews his work, Anthony see elements intuitively added to a subject or inspired idea.
Malaika (sold out)
16 x 20 Giclee'
Edition Size 300

The figures, often depict women which to me represent the circle of life. For the sake of important elements in a work, Anthony often exaggerate or distort shapes and lines to enhance the overall flow and composition. As he applies the paint, Sometimes it is a struggle to not get in the way of the process as it unfolds. It works best if the vision guides him, not he guide it... Anthony's emotional response to a subject or inspired idea, is his first consideration. He approaches each creation with an open attitude, exerting my emotions and with-out a pre-planned conception which can be both ally and adversary to the process. Very often Anthony finds surprising connections and coincidences especially in a new imagined concept...His objective is to provide new interpretations of the natural beauty around us in explained and unexplained ideas.

Anthony Armstrong encourages the viewer to engage with the shapes and movement in the paintings through my choice of color palettes and imagery.

Lady Flava's Side Note:

I met Anthony Armstrong in cyberspace too. Coming to know that he was an artist of course peaked my interest.  I asked for his website and come to an amazing online gallery of an array of styles, color usage and techniques.  His work is breath taking and I would highly recommend that you take a visit and see for yourself at:

Poetry, Rhythm & Rhyme...

Indigent

The skin on his face looked
Like paint peeling from a wall,
Crevasses frozen in-place
Left hard time milestones,

Eyes without fire
Hung over his dirty cheeks
In slow motion paralysis,

I couldn’t discern where
The greasy grime
On his neck ended
And his stringy hair began,

Yellow and black mottled teeth
Sparsely occupied his mouth,

His pungent breath elicited
My gag reflex as he
Stuttered and stammered guttural
Sounds through vomit coated lips
With his filth ridden hand extended,
“Ca- Ca- Ca- Ca- Can yu-yu-you
Gi-gi-give me-e-e a-a-a- da-da-dime?”

Nanosecond thoughts shot
Around in my head, and I thought,
What about my financial problems?
I owe the IRS, my student loans, car payments, the ex-wives for my kids, my rent…

I stood there with invisible financial
And emotional filth covering me,

Repulsive indigence covered
Each of us over the need for a dime,
A need for help, a need for support
In a world that has turned
Its’ back on the sanctity of life,
So, we stood there,
Joined in filth-ridden want.

Buying My Cowboy Hat

When everything gets boiled down,
I'm just a cowboy from Issaquah.
Simple. Uncomplicated.
Sureness you can see.
Information you can trust.

I walked into the Issaquah Grange,
Gas and Country Store across
From the Triple X Root Beer
After enjoying a frosty mug.
I bellied up to the counter
And said, " I need a new hat."
The sales girl said, "How big’s your head?"
I said with a smile, "As big as what you’re lookin’ at."
And she said, "I can tell you have a big noggin."
(I think she was using a metaphor for my ego.),
I said, "Yes Ma'am, let's see what you've got."
She took me by an imaginary string
Attached to my nose through the tight aisles
Between the ladies boots and bras and the horse tackle.
I took one look at the well-worn lookin’ Shady Brady
Straw hat and said, "That looks good to me!"
I tried it on, it fit, I paid for it
And I walked out of the store wearing it.
I felt like a country king wearing his new crown.
Gottsa go dancing I thought driving away in my ‘67 Ford truck…

Mr. Ripley
Relationship Guru

Dear Mr Ripley,
The Lutera pill has ruined the relationship I was having...

I don't know what to do....I started to wig out on him but it is only cause I couldn't control my emotions cause of the birth control pill.

I asked him do you want a break over and over (and it was like I was having this uncontrollable panic attack) cause we were arguing about something that was not worth arguing about so I feel like I pushed him to say that he needs a break from us.

What does that mean?

He knew that I wasn't feeling right because I told him how the pill was making me feel even before the argument.

Now he won't talk to me.

And it's like I lost a great man.

And how I acted wasn't even me at all.

I sent him facts and reviews on this drug.

I just need advice.

Should I just wait a couple weeks? Should I move on? When he said he "needs a break from us" does that mean he will talk to me later or he's done with me?

I'm really scared that I lost the man I loved.

"What to do now"

Dear What To Do Now,

First of all stop blaming a pill for this so called "emotional breakdown" that has seemingly driven ur man away. You were probably that way even before the medication. Medication is like alcohol or any other drug. They are truth serums. When ur intoxicated by such things, u may say stuff that u didn't WANT to say, but ur still saying things that u MEAN.

Your constantly repeating and asking him if he wants to take a break from the relationship was for one of two reasons: there is an insecurity within u that is telling u that this man really doesn't want u or there is a deeper issue of u being confused (as most women are) about what u really want and throwing this little fit of urs in hopes that he may actually leave u this time. Now ur feeling bad and still confused because u miss him and know that he was a damn good man...who u probably dissed for someone who's totally the opposite. I think he was a very smart man to leave u when he did.

Dear Mr. Ripley.

Is there dating after 50?  What is the best approach for a seasoned women to explore the world of dating again

-Ready To Explore Again-

Dear Ready to Explore Again,

First off I love how u use the word "seasoned" i regards to ur age. But to your answer your question, the answer i 'yes'. There is dating after 50. But are we just dating or is there hope for a relationship here? A committed relationship. This is when it gets tricky. By this lovely age, the both of u will be 'set in ur ways'. Both are probably stubborn and selfish. And its usually the woman that ends up changing or trying to change so that this relationship can be.

Mistake #1. If u hav to change who u are to be with a person then guess what? U are not supposed to be with that person, you'll be very unhappy from the jump and the bond is destined to crash. Finding 'Right Man' is the key but, once again, the 'seasoned' person doesn't have the time or should I say the patience to search as thoroughly as they would if they were in their 20s or 30s. You need an immediate attraction and sadly, the dude that you are immediately diggin is probably 'Wrong Man'. He is the guy that is always in plain site for you to see, 'Right Man' is a lil harder to find, as he should be.

So, dating after 50, 'yes', if you're just looking for some company or booty calls. And there's nothing wrong with being a 'cougar' and turnin' out those young cats that haven't had the pleasure of 'seasoned' sex. They just don't know. But finding a relationship that is ideal to any self-loving, self-respecting woman is just as hard as it was when you were 'unseasoned'.

-Mr. Ripley, The Relationship Guru-
*****

Dear Mr. Ripley

Can someone please explain the need for deception and lies when getting to know someone? Every girl is not programmed to hear or believe the "I got plenty Money - Pliers" b.s., so why do so many guys feel that is necessary? Why do so many women say, "I don't tell them about this or that?
It may be only 20% of the population that operates on truth and reality and I'm part of that small percentage. Lying is only a screwed up means to get you temporary satisfaction but it never lasts in the long run. I guess 80% of the population falls in love with the image of money and 20% fall in love with the true person.
Can someone explain the need to shovel this b.s. for people who are over 30?

 -Lies, Lies, Lies-

Dear Lies, Lies, Lies,

I would have to agree with u on that and will try and inject some insight on the subject. First let me say that there is no such thing as being in a relationship and not lying. You can't do that no matter what u say. Just like you can't go thru life without lying, its impossible so stop "Lying, Lying, Lying" to yourself. Second, this issue about relationships built on lies. This is true but let me pose the question to you: what is it within yourself that keeps attracting dishonest ppl....hmm..now let that marinate. BUT also society can be brought up as a reason ppl are this way.

Just as you quoted Pliers' song, this fantasy lifestyle (although it may not be a fantasy for ppl such as the aforementioned rapper) is very attractive, of course. U see it on TV, u hear it on the radio and u think that this is how 'they attract all these women'. So a lot of 'sheep' follow suit and pretend that they are ballin on a higher level, when all it is that most women want is a man who has. That's it, just a man who 'has'.

Are u a woman who would be happy with a man that just 'has'? You sound like you are but I say once again, u are ATTRACTING this type of person so sit back and analyze that. Do some research on the 'Laws of Attracton'. And honestly, it could be something that ur completely oblivious to but...let it marinate. Start with you.

  • The second project is a audio CD with a variety of pieces that also is uplifting and encouraging.

The workshops take place throughout the  Kent, Renton, Tukwila & Seattle area and you can participate as you are available. (Of course this is for Local Artist)

One of the contracts that UTB has is is working with at-risk youth that are struggling with attendance issues at school, they are failing classes and at-risk of being suspended from school to the point that  the King County Truancy Court have become involved.  Unleash the Brilliance has regularly scheduled workshops that meets with the youth and parents and or guardian.s  The goal of UTB is to come up with a variety of creative ways to reach the youth regarding the importance of continuing their education.  Another concern that will be addressed is,  why the youth are skipping school, identifying the core issue, to exploring a resolution with the youth, parents and or guardian that will comply with the Truancy Court.

If you are interested in getting involved by donating a piece or your time, please contact me at: events@flavanews.com

If you are interested in making an in-kind donation no matter how big or small you can go to: www.paypal.com and use events@flavanews.com and identify the donation as "UTB"

We Belong Together
by Barbara Grovner

It’s hard to imagine the death of a close family member. Especially when it is someone you admire and look up to, and most especially when it is your very own sister. Kara’s death caused deep heartache among those who loved her, but soon it became apparent that her killer was someone who knew her, and knew her
very well.

An extensive and painstaking investigation, rattles and shakes
the lives of those who loved Kara, until the truth comes tumbling out.

KWJZ Smooth Jazz Chateau Ste Michelle Winery Music Festival
August 8, 2010

My dear friend Alvin Lloyd Alexander Horn attended this amazing event as a VIP thanks to my niece Michele.  It had been many years since I had been to Chateau Ste Michelle Winery for a jazz show, so I was so excited.  I have to say, it was a wonderful experience.  We were in the VIP tent with amazing food cook and served by Fishbone in Bothell, WA.  Free wine and drink, along with snack foods for 5 hours.  We experienced the sounds of Jackiem Joyner, Brian Bromberg (one of Alvin's favorite stand up bass players), Acoustic Alchemy (that played while dinner was being served) to end the evening with Fourplay (which consists of Lee Ritenour, Herbie Hancock and Chuck Loeb, there was one more and missed the name sorry)

The whole atmosphere was special..good music, great food and drink and making new friends with Conrad & Shannon in the VIP Tent.  I feel like it was meant for Conrad & Shannon to sit at our table...they helped make the time fun and entertaining. The both are artists.  Conrad a slam poet, that recited a few pieces for Alvin and myself. To Shannon being a singer and recording artist...although I wasn't able to coax her to sing...I did find her CD on CD Baby and she has a beautiful, sweet voice.  We exchanged contact info and are now friend on facebook.  I am sure that we will be seeing this couple again in the near future.  I put 2 of Conrad's pieces in this newsletter.  I will be sharing more of his work and audios through Flava News.

I want to thank Alvin for being my friend-date...I could not have had a better time with anyone else.  I new he would appreciate the jazz seen.  Again, I thank my niece Michele for allowing us to attend this event as a VIP.  It was one of the best times I have had ever.

Black Stax at Babalu Lounge in Wallingford
August 21, 2010

For those that know me, know that the group, Black Stax is a passion of mine.  Since I am new to the hip hop scene...they were one of my first really introduction to the hip hop scene here in Seattle...I say it is a blessing even though Blak will tease me that it is not...lol  I have had sit downs with Jace from Black Stax, to interviewing Felicia Loud and on another occasion the group Black Stax.  I was a VIP at their Album Relase party at the Nectar Lounge this past April....so I have had the opportunity to get to know this group one on one...and learn to listen and appreciate their unique sound.

I stepped into the Babalu Lounge in Wallingford knowing this would be a different type of venue than the norm for a hip hop showcase.  I loved the set up,  Small but very intimate.  A beautiful club.  I am a people watcher...I watched the people as they came in, what type of people down to even how they were dressed and carried themselves to get a feel of what the vibe might be for the show.  DJ Sleepy and friend were on the tables spinning the cuts.

When the show started the place was almost packed, the attendees had started to get their drink on and were up talking and mingling with each other that they were not really aware that the show had started.  I will address this matter at the end of my thoughts.

Miss Felicia Lound sat on the one step up stage with her head down and started blowing into the mic out of no where. This will be a scene in time I will always remember.  Owuor Arunga on trumpet allowed his sound to sing perfectly with Felicia Louds...oh so beautiful.  It was like Arunga and Loud were one in melody and rhyme.  Oh course, it wouldn't be right is Felicia had not sung "I Love My Life" and she did not disappoint.

"Pay attention, please....attention, please"...rung out...as she goes into a freestyles a new piece as the sound man fixes an issue that is going on....Felicia did not let the problem stop the show...she kept is flowing with the help of Owuor.  Spitting out words about nailing body parts to the floor in dealing with relationship issues...you would have to hear it to understand...lol

Next Owuor Arunga does is thing...I do not know any background of this gifted artists but I can tell you that from the few times I have heard him in person to the listening to his parts on the CD...He doesn't just play the horn, he makes it sing...allowing it to tell it's own story.

Taking a break before the 2nd set..DJ Sleepy and friend get the party jumping.  By this time the space was packed, wall to wall people.  People dancing, drinking and talking lot.  It was a very very diverse crowd and it appeared that everyone was having a great time.  Several birthday parties came out to celebrate at the Babalu this evening.

The 2nd set starts and now Blak and Jace and joined Felicia on stage...spitting out the unique sounds of the group I have come to know, love and respect...the sounds of Black Stax. I bob my head, even at points closing my eyes so that my ears and sense close out the sounds around me...allowing me to focus my heart and soul on Black Stax. You could tell that all that was up close to the stage was all into it...you could clearly see who was feeling and understanding what they were experience.

To Black Stax, this was a great time for me to know you in person, to have interviewed you all and to see you on a big stage in a large venue to seeing you in a smaller more intimate setting.  I now know how versatile you are...You can make your sound fit into any venue.

Black Stax had a month run at the Babalu Lounge in Wallingford.  Performing every Saturday.  This was wonderful and I would like to see more of this happening and have my mind thinking on how and where.

Now, I do need to address something.  The one thing that bothered me about this event, which had nothing to do with Black Stax.  The people in the back of the room that were celebrating birthdays were loud and drunk...they did not show the artist performing the respect that was due...it you did not have the ability to tune them out...it could be considered distracting taking away from the artist's performance.  Now, what was the reason for coming out to this event if you were not there to show love to the artists?  \Who should have addressed this, or should this have been something that should be addressed?  Now this leads me into another direction, what role does the venue play in the success of a showcase?  Just food for thought...You know how Lady Flava does this.

Black Stax has toured on the East Coast, toured in California, been interviewed in Seattle, California, Chicago and now Baltimore...When Felicia Loud belts out, "Pay Attention, Please"  Black Stax...The world is paying attention!

Take a listen to my interview with Black Stax on Friday, August 20th

Miles Anthony
CEO of Righteous Music Media LLC

www.righteousmusicmedia.com

A native of Harlem, NY, Miles Anthony’s love for music started as a child. His interests grew in college when he became a disc jockey at UCONN, spinning for 91.7 WHUS FM radio in Storrs Connecticut. The college radio station’s popularity developed due to his fantastic voice and innovative approach to audience connection. Miles continued to explore new and exciting heights in music while at UCONN by joining the university gospel choir, where the discovery for the love for singing began
.

After college, Miles worked at DNA International Records and S.O.U.L Records, two independent Hip Hop labels with major distribution. It was there he gained the elementary formula to the workings of the music business. These were skills that he would continue to take with him and build upon throughout his career. Simultaneously, he joined several male R&B groups. Most notably, was the wildly popular DyeVerse, who got their record deal with a then budding record label Roc-a-fella Records.

Miles’ other profession includes Audio Engineering, working for worldwide cable TV networks. As an engineer, Miles understands the importance of mass media and it’s contributions to the world of music. Although he took on other positions, his roots in music remained and therein lies the birth of Righteous Music Media LLC and Righteous Music Records.

Putting to use all of these remarkable skills obtained to expand his company, it is no wonder that Miles Anthony is already a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. Righteous Music Media LLC is an entertainment, artist management, referral, and entertainment industry consultation firm. Righteous Music Records is a collaborative entity for development of the recording artists. What sets apart Righteous Music Media LLC and Righteous Music Records from others is its artist involvement. Any artist signed to the label or to management has a clear stake on his/her own creative development. The firm’s functions are including, but not limited to, A&R, songwriting, branding, marketing strategies and artist development. Coming from the standpoints of the artist and of the music business, Miles can identify with all aspects that confront artists.

It is Miles Anthony’s dedication to exposing timeless music with some of the world’s most talented that is going to stand the test of time.

Lady Flava's Side Note:
I became acquainted with Miles Anthony through a mutual online friend.  Miles reached out to me when Flava News first signed up to host an online radio show and asked if we would consider playing his artist Darien's music. In listening to Darien's music I fell in love with his sound.  Over the year I have watched Miles Anthony maneuver online in promoting Darien and while keeping everyone updated on showcases, competitions and accomplishments for his client.

I so admire the hard work that Miles Anthony puts in for Darien and the hustle and determination that this team has created to take things to the next level.

I recently had the opportunity to have a lengthy conversation with Miles Anthony.  We spoke on a lot of what you just read above but going more into details of his start in this industry as a perform to being the "go to" man for his group and now owning his own record label and management company.
For Miles Anthony it works being the CEO of his own business because it allows him to have sole control of the decision making along with not needing to pay someone else to do the work that he can do himself.  At times it is not easy to wear all hats, but at the end of the day...it is the only way to do business through Righteous Music Media.

As he spoke on his client Darien, he also shared what managers and labels look for in an artist.  Darien is the whole package.  He is a true performer and creative talent in many areas such as dance, rap, song writing and a singer.  He has a polished look and sound.  He is articulate along with being warm and welcoming.  Miles shares that the Darien you see on stage, hear on his album and meet in person is the one in the same..."No fakeness" in his capabilities and personality. The artist's image is important and being authentic. A polished sound that produces a quality product that is competitive, that can be marketed well.  A lot rides on the ability to create your own opportunity, after doing your homework on the industry, to creating  your uniqueness, that will help to determine were you can fit in and stand out.

Before our conversation ended, I asked at what point and what does it take to retain a Miles Anthony on your team.  He said you need to be the whole package.  You need to be one that HE can and will be passionate about and believe in.  A sound and a presence that HE knows HE can market.  He has turned down artists because he knew HE could not market them, that have gone on to do great things.  He has not regrets because HE knew that he could not put his heart and soul into them. This  gives him peace in staying true to self.

Darien is his passion.  He so believes in him.  He puts in long hours of homework and research.  Miles Anthony sits on the phone, on the internet and goes to in person meetings to get his foot in the door for his client.

I will share a videos with you, to show  you just what Darien and Righteous Music Media-Miles Anthony have accomplished this past year
.

Soul City Radio
www.soulcityradio.com

Soul City is where those weary travelers in search of good music find there home. Where the essence of Soul lives. When you see that ominous glow off in the horizon, you know you're there.

It is and always will be our mission to be the voice of the Indie artist. If you are amongst the masses that create music because you have love for it, you have a station willing, ready and able to let your sound be heard. This is where up and coming artists can get their sound out to the masses.

We seek to promote independent music across several genres up to but not limited to Soul, R&B, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Inspirational. Each week we feature some of the best independent artists around. We continually strive to bring you a quality alternative to mainstream media.

Please click on the General Information Tab for our broadcasting schedule, as well as submission guidelines for artists looking to submit their music for consideration. Also, please take the time to check out our Sponsors page.

We welcome all feedback, so please click on the Contact Us tab and drop us some. We accept donations as well. All we ask for is $1. I know you can spare that right? All donations go directly to keep Soul City Radio running. Please click on the donate button at the bottom of the page.
